Key Responsibilities:

As a Lead Teacher within Magisters Alternative Provision in Newbury, you will play a vital role in leading teaching and learning while supporting pupils with complex and diverse needs. You will be expected to fulfil the following responsibilities:

  • Lead and manage teaching and support staff, creating a professional, trauma-informed culture that prioritises pupil wellbeing and progress
  • Support and challenge staff through regular supervision, addressing underperformance while promoting professional development
  • Contribute to budget management and resource allocation alongside the Director of Alternative Provision
  • Implement and monitor safeguarding policies, ensuring full staff compliance
  • Support recruitment processes in line with safer recruitment procedures
  • Contribute to self-evaluation and continuous improvement planning
  • Identify CPD needs, particularly around trauma-informed practice, behaviour management, and de-escalation
  • Support succession planning and staff progression opportunities
  • Promote high-quality, personalised teaching tailored to pupils with complex needs
  • Develop and implement individual learning and behaviour support plans
  • Monitor teaching standards through observations, learning walks, and work scrutiny
  • Track pupil progress and implement targeted interventions to overcome barriers to learning
  • Ensure assessment systems provide meaningful insights into progress and readiness for next steps
  • Maintain high expectations for behaviour while supporting underlying needs
  • Act as Designated Safeguarding Lead or Deputy DSL as required
  • Manage safeguarding concerns promptly and maintain accurate records
  • Liaise with external agencies including social care, CAMHS, and youth services
  • Build strong, trusting relationships with pupils and families
  • Coordinate multi-agency support for pupils’ holistic development
  • Work closely with external agencies to coordinate support
  • Report on educational and operational performance to senior leadership
  • Contribute to reports required by commissioners and regulatory bodies
  • Ensure the provision meets statutory requirements and is prepared for inspection
  • Maintain accurate records including attendance, behaviour, safeguarding, and progress data
  • Implement health and safety procedures and risk assessments
  • Monitor quality of education through regular evaluation

 

Role Requirements:

To be considered for this role, candidates must meet the following requirements:

  • Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) and a relevant degree
  • A minimum of 3 years successful teaching experience, ideally with vulnerable learners or SEMH needs
  • Experience of safeguarding and child protection procedures
  • Strong understanding of the needs of pupils with SEMH, trauma, EBSA, or disrupted education
  • Ability to build positive relationships with disengaged or vulnerable young people
  • Proven ability to lead, motivate, and support a team
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Excellent assessment and data analysis skills
  • Commitment to safeguarding and promoting pupil welfare

 

Desirable Skills:

In addition to the necessary requirements, the following skills are desirable:

  • Experience in alternative provision, PRUs, or SEMH settings
  • Leadership experience within teaching and learning
  • DSL training or willingness to complete
  • Training in trauma-informed practice, SEND, or behaviour management
  • A relevant leadership qualification such as NPQML or NPQSL

You will also demonstrate resilience, emotional intelligence, and a genuine commitment to improving outcomes for vulnerable young people, alongside a reflective and non-judgemental approach to your practice.
